Bali Gluten Free Guide

Bali Gluten Free Guide

Note: last updated in 2018. Please make sure to double check that restaurants are open and still able to cater.

Bali is absolutely stunning. I was only there for a week visiting Ubud and Canggu, but I could have spent months exploring its beauty. The Balinese people are some of the friendliest I met in South East Asia, and what's more, they know how to cook!

The fact that Bali has become quite 'hippy' means that it's full of restaurants catering for dietary requirements like gluten free, dairy free, vegetarian and vegan (although ironically the Balinese diet traditionally includes a lot of meat). Because of this, it's one of the easiest places to be Coeliac or gluten intolerant in Asia.

Here are my suggestions for Ubud and Canggu.

Ubud

Ubud Gluten Free Kitchen (formerly House of Schnitzel)

When I went to Bali, House of Schnitzel was a mostly gluten free restaurant. Now, it's a 100% gluten free restaurant! The menu is absolutely incredible; pasta dishes, pies, and of course the infamous Schnitzel. The service is also great with cute bells to ring when you'd like something, and staff who are dedicated to the restaurant's gluten free mission.

Atman Kafe

Atman Kafe is a MUST for gluten free visitors to Bali. There are two locations, but I'd recommend the one slightly further from the town centre for beautiful views of the field in the background. Atman stocks gluten free pasta, pizza, and bread, but had run out of all of these when I was there (disaster, I know). However, it was actually a blessing in disguise because the vegetarian pad thai I had instead might have been the best thing I ate all trip.

The Spell Creperie

The Spell Creperie has the most delicious crepes and an eco-friendly mission so use less plastic, no palm oil, no aluminium and so on. They have gluten free crepes which are to die for, but please make sure to explain that you're coeliac and need a clean pan to be used. You'll be able to see them making your crepe so you can keep an eye out. I'd recommend all the toppings, but definitely try their vegan salted butter caramel!

Watercress

Glancing at the menu in Watercress, I was confused as to why I'd be recommended it as a gluten free option. But if you look carefully they stock gluten free bread and their food is so fresh and vibrant. I had my bread topped with lemon roasted chicken, tomato pesto and radishes which was delicious. The real star of the show, though, is the iced teas which come which a lime sorbet float. I can't think of anything more refreshing!

Kokolato

Kokolato is everyone with dietary requirements' dream. Tasty, refreshing, vegan ice cream and gluten free cones made from rice! I went for the mint choc chip (no regrets) and ate it while I played with the cute cat. Google maps will give you one location, but the best Kokolato stall is half way along the Campuhan Ridge Walk (an absolute must when you're visiting Bali). Stop for ice cream and take in the amazing views.

Canggu

Betelnut Cafe

Betelnut cafe does the yummiest food, consisting mostly of burgers (they have gf buns if you ask) and Mexican dishes. I went twice and had the amazing naked burrito bowl both times, because you don't change a winning formula. Just look at the colours!

Lacalita Bar y Cocina

Lacalita is an amazing Mexican with all of the gluten free options marked on the menu! We went here on the last night of our entire trip, so it's a bittersweet memory, but the food was definitely a sweet part. We shared chicken, lime and cucumber ‘tostaditas’, grilled corn with chipotle mayo, and ‘fundido’ (aka melted cheese, chorizo, tomato and jalapeño with tortilla chips).

I wish I'd been to more of Bali and there's many beautiful places not included in this guide, but I can't recommend Ubud in particular enough.

I hope you enjoy Bali and its culinary delights as much as I did. Georgia x
