Utrecht Gluten Free Guide
Note: last updated in 2018. Please make sure to double check that restaurants are open and still able to cater.
I spent half of my year abroad during university living in Utrecht. It's a beautiful city, just a stones throw from Amsterdam but much more peaceful with a river winding through. There's so many outdoorsy things to do like kayaking, climbing the Dom Tower, or cycling round the city. But there's also loads of good places to eat and adorable cafes to sit in and watch the world go by.
Here are my gluten free restaurant recommendations:
Breakfast/Brunch
Theehuis Rhijnauwen
This is a little way out of the city, but only a 20 minute bike ride and so worth it because...it's a pancake house, in a forest. I don't think it gets much cuter than that. They offer a variety of sweet and savoury gluten free pancakes, and the hot chocolate is delicious so it's a great place to cuddle up on a cold day. For a warmer day, the outside decking area is the place to be.
Yoghurt Barn
I spent way too much time in Yoghurt Barn and I have no regrets. It's a cute, central little cafe where you can choose your own combination of yoghurt, toppings and coulis from an amazing range, and it always turns out delicious! They also have gluten free (and dairy free) cakes like the yummy strawberry and white chocolate 'no cheesecake' pictured below.
Lunch/Dinner
De Ontdekking
De Ontdekking is the cutest cafe in the centre of Utrecht. They have gluten free bread to accompany their many sandwich and soup offerings. The menu changes regularly but it's always so tasty, and it's a nice place to spend a few hours chatting over lunch and a coffee.
Fam Stegeman
Fam Stegeman is another cute cafe, but this time in an open square so it's great on a sunny day for people watching (or the inside is nice too). They have gluten free bread and really tasty open sandwiches like the Asian style pulled pork one pictured below.
Il Pozzo
It took me so long to find gluten free pizza in Utrecht so I was over the moon when I did. It was by no means the best gf pizza I've had, but if you've got a craving for Italian then Il Pozzo is the place to go! It's also right by the river so has beautiful views.
Food shopping in Utrecht
Supermarkets in the Netherlands (such as Jumbo and Albert Heijn) are quite good at catering for gluten free in general, and you'll always be able to find a few bits.
One place that's a bit more pricey but I'd particularly recommend is Natuurwinkel, where I found this amazing gluten free aisle:
If you'd like any tips of things to do in Utrecht, feel free to get in contact, I'm always up for a chat about my fave little Dutch city!
