“Severed mummy hand” Halloween sausage plait (GF, V, VEO)

“Severed mummy hand” Halloween sausage plait (GF, V, VEO)

This “severed mummy hand” is a scarily simple sausage plait variation, wrapped in gluten free pastry and filled with your favourite sausages.

Such a crowd pleaser for a Halloween dinner, and great for fussy kids too as there’s no complicated flavours!

You could make your own pastry for this - I like “The Loopy Whisk” gluten free puff pastry recipe - but for an easy version I use the Jus’Rol gluten free pastry sheet. It’s great for dishes like this that don’t need too much “puff”.

If you make my Halloween sausage plait I’d love to see! You can find me on Instagram @the.gfg.

Ingredients

  • 1 sheet gluten free puff pastry (I use Jus’Rol)

  • 6 vegetarian sausages (those with no casing - like Linda McCartney Lincolnshire style sausages - work best)

  • Red onion chutney (be sure to check it's gluten free)

  • 1 egg (or dairy free milk for vegan alternative)

  • Sesame seeds

  • Red food colouring

Method

  1. Pre-heat the oven to 200°C.

  2. Lay out your puff pastry on a sheet of baking paper. Crack your egg (or pour your dairy free milk) into a mug or small bowl, whisk with a fork and brush over your pastry, keeping the leftover beaten egg for later.

  3. If your vegetarian sausages are frozen, defrost in the microwave. If they have a casing, remove the casing. Place the sausages in a bowl and mush with a fork to make your plait filling.

  4. Spread a roughly hand-shaped layer of chutney over the middle of your pastry. This does not need to be exact, and do not cut the pastry at this stage.

  5. Shape your sausage filling into a hand shape in the centre of your pastry sheet, on top of the chutney. I find the easiest way to do this is to create a circle for the "palm" first, followed by the fingers.

  6. With a sharp knife, cut strips of pastry working outwards from your "hand".

  7. Starting from the bottom and working up towards the fingers, wrap the pastry over the "hand" one strip at a time. Brush each strip with the beaten egg as you go. You may have some cut off bits of pastry - that's not a problem as these are great for filling in gaps and wrapping the "fingers".

  8. Sprinkle the finished "hand" with sesame seeds (if using) and bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.

  9. For a gory effect, dye a little chutney red with the red food colouring and place at the "wrist" to give a "severed hand" effect.

Enjoy!
